James Mazzo is the CEO of Acufocus, Inc., a developer of innovative medical devices that restore reading vision. He was formerly the CEO of Abbott Medical Optics and serves on the boards of many health care technology companies. He has been an advisor to MDbackline since 2014.


William Link, Versant Ventures

William Link has been an advisor to MDbackline since 2013 and is the founder of Versant Ventures, a Newport Beach, California­-based venture company, which has helped numerous leading health care technologies advance from idea to full commercial success. His background in engineering and health care has made him an invaluable advisor and board member to many health care companies.

Andy Policano, former Dean, UC-Irvine Merage School of Business

Andy Policano, an advisor to MDbackline, is the former dean of the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California-­Irvine, where he currently serves as a Professor of Economics/Public Policy. Prior to his tenure at UC Irvine, Andy was dean at the School of Business at the University of Wisconsin, Madison for 10 years.

Michael aghajanian, former managing partner, prtm

Michael Aghajanian is the former managing partner of PRTM, the world’s leading management consulting firm with offices in eight countries around the globe. His interest in helping medicine evolve through patient­-centered technology led Michael to join MDbackline as an advisor and principal in 2013.

Richard Lindstrom MD, Founder, Minnesota Eye Consultants

Richard Lindstrom is an advisor to MDbackline. An internationally recognized ophthalmologist and corporate advisor, Richard is a past president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and is the Chief Medical Editor of the world’s most widely distributed eye care trade journal. He has been an advisor to MDbackline since 2012 and a user of the software in his medical practice at Minnesota Eye Consultants.

John Hovanesian MD, Founder, MDbackline

John A. Hovanesian, the founder of MDbackline, is an ophthalmologist in clinical practice in Laguna Hills, California and a leading researcher and surgeon in his field. His interest in improving the information exchange between doctors and patients led him to create MDbackline in 2012 as a tool that can be used by clinicians everywhere.

Armond Hairapetian, Miramar Venture Partners

Armond Hairapetian serves as an advisor to MDbackline. He has been an entrepreneur since graduating from UCLA with his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, where he also earned an MBA from the Anderson School of Management. He also co­founded and was CEO of NewPort Communications, where he led the engineering effort in developing the world’s first OC­48 and OC­192 transceivers in CMOS, and ultimately sold the company to Broadcom in August 2000 for approximately $1.2 billion.


Vijay Gurbaxani, an advisor to MDbackline, is the Taco Bell Endowed Professor of Information Systems and Computer Science and Director for the Center for Digital Transformation at the Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine.

Kathaliya Folds, technology lead for MDbackline, is an experienced IT professional with a strong background in software development. She specializes in helping doctors use technology to improve clinic efficiency to ensure the best care for patients. She joined MDbackline in 2014 and is excited to see how MDbackline continues to improve leading medical practices across the country.

Business Development Team

Erik Hough, Director of Business Development

Erik Hough is the Director, Business Development of MDbackline, LLC. He has more than 20 years of experience in the health care industry. Most recently, he was a Senior Eye Care Business Advisor with Allergan (2006 – 2015). Prior to 2006, Erik held business/network development and strategic contract negotiation leadership roles with a variety of health care providers, fully-integrated delivery systems, and health plans. 

Erik has extensive knowledge and diversified experience in strategic planning, business development, contract negotiations, financials, reimbursement, and analytics, to enhance overall financial health, operational efficiencies, and customer satisfaction. He advised physician owners and senior leadership of medical practices, hospitals, teaching institutions, ambulatory surgery centers, and managed care organizations. Erik has presented at local, regional, state, and national eye care meetings and symposiums. He holds Certified Ophthalmic Executive (COE), and Ophthalmic Coding Specialist (OCS) certificates.

Erik earned his Bachelor of Science degree in public administration with an emphasis in health administration from the University of Southern California.
